The differences in the different types and versions of laptop / notebook, netbook and tablet pc's. As in speed and capability.

Most, if not all, display pages of individual models of desktop computer, pc, notebook, laptop, and other comparable computers, will have a list of the specifications as to what it has installed. Below is a brief description of those components, also known as hardware and software.

For further information on any individual item you can do a search on the web to find more information. Also on the Table of Contents page here we are adding links to related items that may be of interest to you.

Most of the time you will also find customer reviews for each item on it's description page.

Size of the display, of the notebook, laptop, netbook, and any other related terms referring to a portable computer, which is going to have a factor as to the overall size of the whole unit. Ranging from 10 inch's to 20 inch's, as measured diagonally across the display screen. As in both of the halves, as in top and bottom which are joined together in a hinged fashion, are going to match each other in size to be able to close properly and protect the vulnerable components as these units are made to be portable. The weight will differ accordingly as to the difference in size for the most part. This will vary some if you get into a specific model such as an 'ultra-thin' laptop.

Brand
Depending on if you have a preference on a particular brand of computer, or are looking for quality at a great price. Most of the computer items you look at will have consumer / customer reviews. Read them and find out what actual owners are saying. You will find that even a top of the line computer, whether a laptop, notebook, netbook, or tablet pc,  may have a few quirks that a customer or two weren't completely happy about.

Speed and capabilities.
This will depend on a number of factors.

Hardware and Software

Operating System:
There are several operating systems available. Some of the computers will give a choice as to which one you want installed, some won't, as well you can get a computer without any OS installed so that you can install your own if you have one.

Components inside:
The components that make the computer function under the direction of the operating system, are the same for a desktop and a laptop, netbook, tablet etc. They are of different make up to be able to adapt to their installation, as in everything would be more compact in one than in the other.

RAM as it was once known not that long ago, but has taken on different terms as technology has advanced and continues to improve on the function of the basic application. Basically is a place to temporarily store and process data as it is needed at a faster rate than having to locate it on a hard drive. The data is obtained and processed in a different and faster manner than it is off of the hard drive. As they perform 2 different functions. The data on the ram will be lost once the power is turned off. Where as the data on the hard drive is recorded, granted you apply the instruction to 'save' it, and would have to be deleted by your instruction to be removed. Different amounts and types of ram are available, and are most of the time able to be upgraded if you felt that you needed more. The cost of the item will increase with the larger and faster versions available.

Hard Drive memory is the overall capacity to store data onto it so it is there when you need and or want it.  The amount will reflect in the cost.

Processor: Another item in the computer that has different versions. From 'will do the job' to more efficient at a faster rate and to where it can do more things at the same time. Faster and more capability, again, will reflect in the cost.

Graphic Card: The purpose of the graphics card is to produce your visual imaging on your monitor screen. This, as in the other components, comes in different degrees of good, better, and best. The cost of the item will increase with the better version.

Audio

Wi Fi : Or the wireless connection interface.

Ports and Line In and Line Out Jacks.
Check the list of Specifications so you know what the particular computer you are loking at has, so you will know, especially if there is something you know that you want. Such as a HDMI port, which is how you could hook up to a different monitor. Don'r assume, always check, so there aren't any surprises.

If you see something in the list and your not sure what it is, you can do a search. Like if you saw DDR2 or DDR3, just type it into your favorite search bar. You can look for a link to wikipedia on the search results page and there you should find very descriptive information.

About LCD monitor displays, as found in laptop and notebook computers. and a brief description of LED, OLED, CCFL, and what they are.

The LCD flat panel display seems to currently be the preferred choice for Laptop / Notebook computers. The  LCD, which is liquid crystal display, does not produce it's own light source. So they require a back  light source to make them visable. ('back light', being a source of illumination)
There are a few variations in different applications. There may be a light source from the front, no light source and being dependent on incoming light, and edge lighting.

There are several different types of back  light applications that can be used, somewhat depending on in which type of application the LCD is used. Such as whether it is a laptop computer, or a HDTV.

The types of back light commonly used in laptop / notebook computers are CCFL, which are, Cold Cathode Fluorescent Lamps.

Also, as the technology has advanced, LEDs, which are, Light Emitting Diodes. It looks as though these have been being introduced progressively more since around 2005, though different applications of use of LEDs have been active for considerably longer. As well, different uses for them are being introduced as their development progresses.

The purpose of this brief introduction to laptop monitors is to try and help clear up any confusion whether or not there is yet a different type of monitor. As in a LED (Light Emitting Diodes), monitor or display. A LED is a LCD, liquid crystal display, with LED, light emitting diodes, providing the light source so you can see the display.

I want to include, that there is a recently introduced technology, for larger display screen applications such as a HDTV, that is an OLED display, that is an Organic Light Emitting Diode display. As far as I can say, from what I have read, this technology has combined the light producing diodes with the pixels that produce the visual color and ability to do what the display needs to do in order to present the visual video imaging, into one unit.

The OLED applications, as do also regular LED usage applications, each in their respective category of use, produce brighter more vibrant and greater dynamic contrast to the visual imaging of which they are being used. LED in both uses also offer a wider color range. Lower power consumption was another factor for the LED. Though as it now is being said that the CCFL is being improved to match the benefits such as lower power consumption, of LED. LED may be more costly in certain applications than CCFL. You can read more about this pro and  con of each here to have a better understanding so that you can make a better informed decision.

Another abbreviation though not commonly seen is TFT LCD. TFT is thin-film transistor. Apparently this is the common for all currently produced LCD monitor screens.
